Established in 2001 under the educational philosophy of creativity and service, Korea Cyber University is Korea's first cyber university. It is a four-year institution of higher learning affiliated with Korea Choongang Education Foundation, alongside Korea University, one of the nation's most prestigious universities. Through a rigorous curriculum, comprehensive student support systems, and industry-academic collaborations with leading domestic and international institutions, Korea Cyber University puts into practice Korea University's educational philosophy through the medium of cyber education.
Korea Cyber University, which opened in 2001 with 7 departments and 796 students, has since grown into a comprehensive institution comprising 24 undergraduate divisions and departments and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, with a total enrollment of 11,759 students as of April 1, 2025. The university also operates 8 auxiliary institutions, including the Future Education Institute, as well as 7 research institutes under the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, such as the AI Big Data Research Institute.
Since its establishment, Korea Cyber University has consistently played a pioneering role in online education. In 2003, it hosted the first online academic forum among cyber universities, followed by the establishment of a next-generation educational information system in 2009. In 2010, the university developed a specialized caregiving education program in collaboration with the Rosalynn Carter Institute in the United States, and in 2013, it opened the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. Continuing its innovative efforts, Korea Cyber University developed a learner-centered learning management system in 2015 and launched "CUK ON," a participatory open lecture program, in 2017. In 2012, Korea Cyber University was designated as a specialized university by the Ministry of Education. This recognition facilitated the establishment of several departments, including the Division of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (2013), the Division of Mechanical and Control Engineering (2014), the Division of Fire Fighting and Safety (2022), the Division of Computer Engineering (2024), and the Division of Architectural Engineering (2024). Additionally, the university reorganized the Division of Future Studies (2018) and the Artificial Intelligence major (2020) into the Division of AI and Data Science in 2025, while also pioneering cyber engineering education by establishing simulation-based online virtual laboratories.
To embody its educational ideals of Creativity and Service, the university launched the "Multicultural Campaign" in 2007, a free online Korean language education program designed for marriage immigrants. Since 2013, this program has expanded to provide Korean language education globally through the "Quick Korean" initiative.
